Not only did Kampfegruppe Pieper commit atrocity known as the Malmedy Massacre of at least 84 Americans who had surrendered to him on 12/17/1944, but the SS tortured and killed some black soldiers on the same date.

They were separated from their division and were taken in by a local farmer. Wereth had been German territory prior to WWI and some families were supportive of the Nazi regime and betrayed the soldiers to the SS. The SS dragged the 11 out of the farmer's home, took them into his fields, tortured them, and ultimately killed them all and left them. Their bodies were not found until Mid-February 1945.

The son of the farmer that took in the Wereth 11 (who was present when the SS dragged them out of his home), erected a small memorial at the site of their deaths. It was later enlarged and now includes this stone.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://in-dads-footsteps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/img_4034.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Monschau, Germany</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://in-dads-footsteps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/img_40311.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Monschau, Germany</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://in-dads-footsteps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/img_4024.jpg</image:loc><image:title>sights in Monschau, Germany</image:title></image:image><lastmod>2018-06-29T22:40:12+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq></url><url><loc>https://in-dads-footsteps.org/2018/05/15/battle-of-the-bulge-tour-day-4-southern-shoulder-october-17-2017/</loc><lastmod>2019-12-30T20:05:26+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq></url><url><loc>https://in-dads-footsteps.org/2018/06/26/battle-of-the-bulge-tour-day-7-return-to-amsterdam-and-vincent-van-gogh-museum-october-20-2017/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://in-dads-footsteps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/img_41851.jpg</image:loc><image:title>2nd Ba</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://in-dads-footsteps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/img_4181.jpg</image:loc><image:title>2nd Ba</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://in-dads-footsteps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/img_4180.jpg</image:loc><image:title>2nd Ba</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://in-dads-footsteps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/img_4178.jpg</image:loc><image:title>2nd Ba</image:title></image:image><lastmod>2018-06-29T21:53:27+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq></url><url><loc>https://in-dads-footsteps.org/2018/06/26/battle-of-the-bulge-tour-day-6-october-19-2017/</loc><lastmod>2018-06-29T21:46:55+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq></url><url><loc>https://in-dads-footsteps.org/2018/05/07/rhine-river-valley-2nd-day-of-all-about-dad-day-3-october-16-2017/</loc><lastmod>2018-06-29T21:28:53+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq></url><url><loc>https://in-dads-footsteps.org/2018/05/05/battle-of-the-bulge-tour-day-3-all-about-dad-october-15-2017/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://in-dads-footsteps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/img_3326.jpg</image:loc><image:title>2nd Battalion HQ Dackscheid, Germany</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://in-dads-footsteps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/img_33252.jpg</image:loc><image:title>2nd Battalion HQ Dackscheid, Germany</image:title><image:caption>HQ for 2nd Battlion, 106th ID (which included Co G).
